Jake Daniels, the 17-Year-old striker for Blackpool FC, wants to set a precedent as a role model for other Footballers. In hopes there can be more openness around their peers in a sport they are passionate about playing.
The announcement from Jake Daniels has brought him support online from fans, LGBTQ+ supporters and leaders in football, who encouraged him.
Although Justin Fashanu came out during the late stages of his career in 1990, no other UK footballers had come out as gay, which means that Jake is currently the only active UK footballer to be openly gay.
The other known actively out gay footballer is in Australia, playing for Australia’s Adelaide United. Josh Cavallo is currently only 22 years old and has previously spoken about homophobic crowd abuse.
Jake has made his debut in the Sky Bet Championship for the season with Blackpool, which fully supports his decision. However, he has had a brief time in the limelight but will start what we hope is a blooming career.
